Smith started solid and the first two goals wer enot his fault. Unfortunately, the team didn't play well and the next 3 goals were savable. Smith was chased at 5-1 and Nitty only gave up one more goal. The team plays different in front of Nitty. |

Reply with quote | #2 | I think Nitty plays much better than Smith, ESPECIALLY on the road. I think a goalie switch is inevitable but not sure how long Tochett will wait. Seeing as the teams # 1 concern is to get Vinny scoring, I feel like they are gonna put this problem on the back burner for awhile and see if it fixes itself. I personally wanted Nitty as the no. 1 before the season started but then again they don't pay me to make the calls. On the bright side, Stamkos scored his 11th goal of the season tonight and we're only 12 games into the season. On the down side, we have yet to win on the road and we have a pretty grueling schedule this week............... |

I agree. And I think the Vinny issue is a non-issue. Vinny has assists and his presence on the ice provides the team with other benefits. Match up decisions for the other teams, etc. I'm sick of hearing that we need to get Vinny to score. The real issue is goaltending and some inconsistent play like we saw last night. When both are present its a loss. Scoring will come in time. As long as Stamkos and some others are scoring we are in a position to win games if our goaltending is solid. On the other hand, it does not appear that Smith is going to change much, though he has had some better games. Last night I thought he was doing ok at 2-0. Then that third goal was inexcusable and the flood gates opened. For the rest of the game, the team gives up one gaol with Nitty. The juxtaposition cannot have made the differences any clearer. |

Having your leader, arguably one of your most potent offensive threats, with just one goal for the month of October is indeed reason for concern... the team as a whole is very inconsistent, and in general hasn't played too well in three years and counting. So fans are concerned, and rightfully so. We'll see tonite in Toronto... __________________ smokem if you gottem |

Reply with quote | #5 | When the team is getting beat by multiple goals, goal scoring may not be the issue. Do you think everything would be "ok" if Vinny was scoring and Stamkos was not. Let's say the goal totals evened out trading Stamkos goals for Vinny goals. What would your excuse be then? Look at the team as a whole. In the season of the Cup they won alot of 1 goal games because Khabi was solid in net. Smith is simply not giving them the goaltending they need. Look at it this way.........if Vinny is not scoring I can get scoring from how many other players?........8-10. If Smith is giving up goals, I only have one option. Who do you think is the bigger issue?
As a hockey coach, it is much more concerning to me that my goaltender is shaky. A sniper can do other things on the ice and his teammates can step up. Not true for a goaltender. He either stops pucks or he does not. He either fixes stylistic flaws or he does not. When a goaltender slumps, the team slumps. When one player slumps, the team can still win. |

Right on Zak- I agree there are things to be concerned about on several fronts- my post merely pointed to the fact that VL4's struggles are an item of concern for all- I'll say this- Remember when Vinny used to carry the puck with determination and focus? Staple guys to the glass when they had it coming? He ain't that guy anymore, and I am worrid about it- I want the old Vinny back man- the sooner the better- and how much better would the team be if he was? That said, What up with Smitty? I am definitely worried about him too- and we are in dire need of some toughness on the blue line, and smaby continues to sit... Too me that is baffling, and I really don't get it at all....how in the world could Kry check be ahead of him on the depth chart?? Cause hockey is about alot more than skating, and this team NEEDS Smaby in the line up, NOW. __________________ smokem if you gottem |
