Hey Buc,

with the Bucs playing so dismally I thought i would ask and see if other people believed that the Bucs had dropped into the root cellar of the NFL.

Then it kinda morphed into what causes a team to be bad - lack of talent or coaching...

With the Bucs - I think that they are bad and definately in the bottom 3 of the NFL, along with the Rams & the Chiefs. Of course the Raiders and Detroit are fighting hard as well.

What makes a team "bad"? Is it just their overall record?

Is it playing well below their potential?

Damn you Wesley! Making think this early with your multiple guess trickeration (my favorite NFL analyst word). I live here, watch here, suffer here, I am also not happy with the decisions that ownership has made here of late. Just as the Super Bowl didn't buy Gruden a pass, neither do the Glazers. They have managed to put this team in the running for the worst team in the NFL, who is the worst? I don't know, I do know who has the most leadership issues, the Raiders followed extremely closely by the Bucs.

Earlier I had my rankings.

1. St. Louis, they have Steven Jackson, and... Steven Jackson... and two shut outs.
2. Cleveland, they're even more confused than we are.
3. Kansas City, they traded Thigpen and signed Cassel why?
4. Detroit, 1-20 over 21 games... nice team.  Atleast Matt Millen's gone.
5. Oakland, JaMarcus Russell, the 5th Best Tampa Bay Area QB, if he was here, behind B.J. Daniels.
6. Tampa Bay, I hope I'm not moved to move them up this list, I was very optimistic a few weeks ago.

As for worst, there is not wrong answer, but I don't think many would disagree with what I have in some order.

My next four are:
7. Buffalo - other than the Tampa Bay game and the adrenaline game against New England, they've gotten spanked
8. Washington - you lose to the Lions, you almost lose to Tampa Bay AND St. Louis, and hang with the Giants on adrenaline.
9. Houston - Jets waxed them, Jacksonville beat them, Tennessee is not high on my list, and Oakland is fighting not to be the worst.
10. Miami - Could get off the list if they can punch out the Jets.

Of course a team can get off this list if they show me something.

11-13 are Carolina, Seattle, and Tennessee, as Seattle blasted St. Louis, but can't hang with the big boys, and Carolina and Tennessee are still 0-4.

Here's how I define "Bad" with my rankings is dependent on how many wins I think a team will win this year, at this time, along with their total wins, head-to-head, and performance for the week.  This comes after my original eyeball test and guessing who's going to be good and who's going to be bad.

Off the field stuff does translate to a team's play.  It's not just overall record, because in my rankings (which I hold on these boards under NFL) #11 Pittsburgh, #12 San Diego, #17 Jacksonville, #18 Green Bay, #19 Dallas, #24 Houston, and #25 Washington are all 2-2 (Philly is #4 and #10 is Atlanta at 2-1).  Why?

The Eagles wins were against Carolina and Kansas City, but they won by atleast 20 points in those, despite losing big to New Orleans (which I consider an anamoly).  New Orleans is just below Philly right now.

#10 is Atlanta - Miami and Carolina (#22 and #23) are their wins and a decisive loss to New England (#6).

#11 is Pittsburgh - Tennessee playing them close was the opener, they lost two close ones, but they managed to knock off a talented San Diego team.  Pittsburgh is ahead of San Diego due to head-to-head.

#12 is San Diego - After Oakland, they hung with Baltimore, thumped Miami, and came back and barely lost to Pittsburgh (closer than the 10 point difference).  Here due to talent.

#17 is Jacksonville - Hung with #2 Indy, got beat by a near perfect Kurt Warner game, but took out only Houston and Tennessee, not so good teams.

#18 is Green Bay - Barely escaped Chicago, who gave them the game;  Got beat by a better than usual Cincy, smoked St. Louis, and somehow hung with Minnesota.

#24 is Houston - Beat soundly by the Jets (currently #8), beat by J'ville (see above), and their wins were against the winless Titans (who I still think are better than Houston), and Oakland (who has only beat Kansas City in a close one).

#25 is Washington - Played New York's Football Giants close, but lost to Detroit (strike one), beat Tampa Bay 16-13 (strike two), and beat St. Louis 9-7 (strike three).  Nothing to phone home about.

Of course the teams are like stock, they rise and fall, and they do so according to how well they perform up to expectations.  A bad team upsetting a good team hurts the better team and may help the worse team.  A bad team beats a worse team, it may not move, or if a middling team plays a premier team close, they won't drop.  A top team struggles against a weak team, it could affect what I think, depending on how it all happened.  Expectations and common opponents sometimes factor in.

I hope that all makes sense, and maybe you'll follow me in the "National Football League" forum and maybe you'll start you own opinions.

A common theme for me is that the talent for the worst six is talent, the next seven are failed expectations for the most part.

After last week's performance I'd have to say that there is a 3-way tie for the NFL's worst team:

Oakland, St. Louis and Tampa Bay

At this point in the season I think the Bucs are looking at a top 5 pick in the 2010 draft

Top 6 pick, after yesterday and a couple wins or close games on the bottom, the order has changed, but not the teams.

1. St. Louis - You can't get any worse! They travel to Jacksonville who has to be very upset after last week.

2. Kansas City - Rises to 2nd worse.  Sure they nearly beat Dallas, but note that they almost won.  They're still the Chiefs.  This happens, ask the Bengals after last week.  They get Washington this week, who could join this list.

3. Cleveland - Congratulations, you won 6-3, it was not decisive, now I think you will win 3 games instead of just 2 for now.  They get Pittsburgh next week... uh oh.

4. Oakland - I got excited after week one, and got sober quick.  They move up a spot to Detroit's old slot.  They get Philly at home... uh oh.

5. Detroit - Just like with Kansas City, do it once, it's a fluke; do it again and win, and I'll think about getting you off this list.  They were good enough and Oakland was bad enough to move down on this list.  Travel to Green Bay... it is doable.

6. Tampa Bay - They did play Philadelphia better than the score indicates.  Lose again and they're down the list. Win, and they might overtake a few teams.

Honorable Mentions (in order): Buffalo, Washington, Houston, Miami (if they lose), Tennessee (if Miami wins).

If Tampa Bay can't take down Carolina and Detroit does very well, then the Bucs might slide up the list.  I can't see the others doing that well.

For my full final list (in order of best to worst), roll over to my "Rankings" in the "NFL" forum.  A lot of immobility because none of the teams can win, and if they do, it's beating up bad teams.

New rankings:

1. St. Louis - They almost won!  How?

2. Cleveland - So they won, big deal.

3. Tampa Bay - Please win so I can stop defending you.

4. Kansas City - They beat Washington, whoop dee doo.

5. Detroit - Shut out and still suck.

6. Tennessee - Now the owners of the worst beating any team will take this year, and worst in years.  Who saw this coming?

Honorable Mentions (in order): Oakland, Washington, Buffalo, Seattle,

Same teams, different order.

I understand St. Louis, but Cleveland ahead of Tampa Bay and Tennessee?  Just because they won, Derrick Anderson and Brady Quinn would be competing to backup Byron Leftwich... NOW.   They're practically useless.

Tennessee still has its pieces from last year, they can't be this bad... it's a down year.

Kansas City might be breaking out... maybe, but I don't think so, and Detroit is still the Lions.

The Bucs because as long as the Glazers are getting away with stealing your money they will go year after year with a losing record.

We're not Detroit or Cleveland, we actually give a crap, so the Glazers will sell, while the other two teams suffer... same with Washington.

Hey the good news today - the Bucs didn't lose

The bad news - the Bucs are the ONLY team without a win.

I'm not sure who's worst the Bucs or the Browns

By record it's obvious that the Bucs are now the worst team, since the Rams and Titans won yesterday.

However, if you match up Tampa Bay against St. Louis, Detroit, Cleveland, Oakland, a return game against Washington, Tennessee before Vince Young, or Kansas City (more so if it's in Tampa Bay), or give us several of these teams, then I'll take the Bucs in each of them.

Too bad the worst team we're facing again this year is Carolina, and they know how to reasonably beat us, but if they can put Carolina in a hole early, it's game over.

Go Bucs, smoke those Packers!
