3 1/3 innings, 100 pitches 6 K's 5 walks...

I don't know about any of you out there, but if I wanted a pitcher to not get out of the 4th and throw a boatload of pitches, we could have just kept Kaz on schedule.

And while you can place the blame on the bullpen (specifically Balfour and Izzy) for blowing last night's game, I can't imagine the bullpen truly expected to have to get 17 outs to end the game.

And now the bullpen is truly stretched to the breaking point.

Are you concerned?  I sure am.

I'm not sure how Wade Davis is doing in the minors, but I figure that they could have given him a taste of the majors and left Price down in the minors for all the reasons he was sent down in the first place.

As you mentioned, yeah, in a blind resume test, you would have been surprised that it wasn't Kazmir last night.  I think some of the stuff they've done with Price in Durham may have thrown him off, who knows?

As for blowing the game, the blame game goes through Joe Maddon and Reid Brignac.  If Brignac gets even one out of what looked like a certain game ending double play, the Rays save Balfour and Isringhausen.  I'd even argue that he could have left Thayer out there.  Why Maddon yanked Choate after Brignac threw the ball away, I have no idea.  Why Bartlett wasn't put in late as a defensive replacement, that's another good question.  Last night's 9th was just one big cluster(expletive), where you thought Isringhausen was finally going to end the game or an Indians player would go fishing and blow it to give us the win.  No such luck and "how the hell did that happen?" sets in.

Am I concerned?  That depends on how well Garza holds up.  If we can get 7 innings out of him and then hand it off to Wheeler and Howell, then I think we'll be fine.  Keep in mind, Cleveland also got slapped around last night, so their bullpen isn't in good shape either, which means if Garza goes deep and the Rays bomb Cleveland early again, we should win tonight.

Here's rooting for Garza.

Price did fine, if you happened to notice the plate Umpire wasn't giving the pitchers in the game anything, not some pitches, no corners, nothing down, he squeezed the plate like no other. The number of pitches thrown in the game was a near record. Price admitted to getting a little amped up after striking out 3 batters in the first, but lets not even begin to confuse Price with Kazmir. FYI, I give Maddon credit for at least 4 losses this year with his unorthodox decision making. Does anyone think that it is a coincidence that once maddon benched Pena at Boston while in the middle of a hitting tear that pena then went cold for 2 weeks?

After writing what I wrote, I did think about the game and how Isringhausen "struck out" a bunch of guys that ended up getting walks, by which I mean, there were pitches I was sure were strikes or close, and never got called.

As for Maddon resting Pena on the Boston game, no one gets that one, and still don't... so much for resting Aki and Bartlett.  I really don't understand that concept.  I understand giving some of the backups playing time in absence of injuries to give them some time, but those guys should either be replacing or being replaced late in games.  Lest we forget that Cal Ripken Jr. played some 2,632 straight games and the Iron Horse put up some 2,130 games.  That's over 16 years straight of playing.

The only guys who really get worn out are pitchers and catchers.  The other guys who are producing just need the normal days off.  It's the guys who can't hold down a position that you have to move around or bench.
